Role Description - Discipline Leader
While many staff teach across disciplines, and this is to be encouraged, the academic structure of the faculty is such that every academic staff member is assigned to a specific discipline group. Members of the discipline group will most likely have varying areas of experience, interest and expertise regarding both the specific content and the pedagogy of the discipline. A Discipline Leader (DL) is designated for each discipline group, and some specific responsibilities (listed below) are allocated to that person. The Dean appoints the Discipline Leaders in consultation with the Head of Academic Group (HoAG), and assignment of Discipline Leader roles is subject to regular review. The role of the DL is not to take sole responsibility for the program offered by the discipline, but rather to work collaboratively with the discipline team in order to capitalise on the expertise of each team member so that:
- the curriculum, offered by the discipline is informed by current research and/or industry practice, and is of an appropriate standard;
- the learning objectives developed in each unit ensure academic progression through the discipline as well as appropriate graduate attribute development;
- a range of flexible learning and teaching methods and multi-modal delivery which are appropriate for the discipline are developed and implemented.
Additionally, the duties of the DL will include, but not be limited to:
- Ensuring that the discipline group functions effectively as a team, consulting as necessary with discipline staff both individually and as a group;
- contributing to the accreditation documentation of any academic programs incorporating the discipline/study area;
- advising students on academic matters relevant to the discipline (in close collaboration with relevant administrative staff);
- approving applications for exemptions in the discipline in consultation with Unit Convenors;
- assessing credit transfer requests and arrangements, both national and international, in consultation with Unit Convenors and Program Coordinators;
- devising appropriate intervention strategies for students 'at risk';
- in consultation with Unit Convenors recommending to the HoAG appropriate sessional staff to be engaged to teach in the discipline;
- checking draft timetables for the units within the discipline;
- maintaining an overview of the results achieved in all units in the discipline/study area including reporting each semester on the overall results for the Faculty Academic Committee;
- assisting at enrolment, orientation, progress review and other events as required;
- any other duties and responsibilities as agreed.
Line management responsibility for members of the designated discipline group is not assigned to the Discipline Leader; it remains with the relevant Head of Academic Group for all academic staff.
