About Research at Swinburne

Graduates who hold a bachelor degree and who have shown a high standard of academic achievement in that course may be admitted to candidature for the degree of Master (by research) or Doctor of Philosophy.

Master: The master degree provides training and education in research methodology and techniques, and their critical evaluation, as appropriate to the field of study, and in the application of such methodology by conducting a specified program of research under appropriate supervision. In addition, this degree requires training in analysing the literature and debate in the substantive area of the thesis topic at an advanced level.

Doctor of Philosophy: The PhD degree provides training and education with the objective of producing graduates with the capacity to conduct research independently at a high level of originality and quality. The student ought to be capable, by the end of his/her candidature, of conceiving, designing and carrying to completion a research program without supervision. The PhD candidate should uncover new knowledge either by the discovery of facts, the formulation of theories or the innovative re-interpretation of known data and established ideas.
