The Learning Disabilities/Dyslexia Project

The Learning Disabilities/Dyslexia Project was established in 2001 by Dr. Everarda Cunningham and Nola Firth. The aim of the project is to undertake research in regard to learning disabilities/dyslexia, develop programs and resources for teachers and students and develop initiatives that facilitate dissemination of knowledge about learning disabilities/dyslexia throughout the wider community.

What is meant by ‘Learning Disabilities/Dyslexia'?

In the Learning Disabilities/Dyslexia Project ‘learning disabilities/dyslexia' refers to those people who have average or above average general ability yet under-perform in one or more academic areas. These people have processing difficulties (e.g., difficulties with short term memory, analysis of sounds or spatial relationships) that make it difficult for them to learn some aspects of literacy and/or numeracy such as reading, spelling or areas of mathematics such as tables recall.
