What is IBL?

  • IBL is a program offered normally to second year students (third year if double degree) in which they undertake a 6 or 12 month full or part time paid industry placement. Most positions are 12 month full time placements.
  • IBL is now offered for credit into a student’s degree course. Known as Credit Bearing IBL (CBIBL), eligible students can opt to take an IBL placement for credit if they have room in their degree structure. They are able to receive credit for up to 4 units for a fulltime 12 month placement. Positions are available for credit or under the traditional IBL placement mode (TIBL) and the decision about which mode to choose is made by the student after receiving an offer from a host organisation. CBIBL students can undertake an IBL position as the last units of their course.
  • Placements normally relate to students’ majors and intended careers but a flexible approach is encouraged by students considering positions as they arise.
  • Whilst on placement students can undertake 1 unit of study per semester for full time placements under TIBL but no additional units are recommended for study under CBIBL due to work load implications.
  • Most positions are sourced by Swinburne (Lilydale’s IBL office) but students are encouraged and supported in any efforts to secure their own position. You are invited to discuss any ideas with the IBL Manager.
  • IBL is not available to International students due to current Australian Government visa regulations.
  • IBL is available in most of Lilydale’s undergraduate degree programs but always subject to offers made by industry hosts.
  • IBL is available to TAFE Pathway students who have completed a minimum number of Higher Education units. The IBL manager can advise on requirements.
  • IBL is an optional program and is acknowledged on both a student’s transcripts (recorded as a FHEL unit of study) and their testamur which is received upon graduation. Fees are payable by students who obtain a position but these are able to be added to HECS
  • A pass grade average in Higher Education units is required as an entry requirement for both modes of IBL.
  • Most IBL positions entail direct employment with the host but some positions are organised as an IBL Scholarship position. This is indicated when positions are advertised to students and information is provided about how the IBL Scholarship works.
